Melasma description: Melasma, also called chloasma, is one of the forms of hyperpigmentation that occurs on the face and on parts of the body that are usually more exposed to the sun, such as the forearms. Melasma is very common on the cheeks, nose, upper lip, and forehead.

However, it is much more common for it to occur in the latter, especially in pregnancy, when there is hormonal stimulation of the melanocytes, which are precursors of melanin, which is the pigment that determines our color.

Like during pregnancy, women who take contraceptives have hormonal changes that promote the appearance of melasma.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that, unlike the spots resulting from the passage of time and age, melasma tends to disappear after childbirth or estrogen reduction, but both types of hyperpigmentation have in common the factor that most aggravates its appearance: the sun.
