INVOKANA 300 mg Film-Coated Tablets
Generic Name: Canagliflozin Hemihydrate
Strength: 300 mg
Pack Size: 30 Tablets
Therapeutic Class: Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) Inhibitor – Oral Antidiabetic Agent
Manufacturer: Janssen-Cilag Ltd (Johnson & Johnson)
ATC Code: A10BK02

Description:
INVOKANA 300 mg contains canagliflozin, an oral antidiabetic agent that inhibits the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) in the kidneys. This action reduces glucose reabsorption, increases urinary glucose excretion, and lowers blood glucose levels independently of insulin. Additionally, INVOKANA has demonstrated cardiovascular and renal benefits in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Indications:

  • As an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

  • To reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal stroke) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease.

  • To reduce the risk of end-stage kidney disease, doubling of serum creatinine, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and diabetic nephropathy with albuminuria >300 mg/day.

Dosage and Administration:

  • The recommended starting dose is 100 mg once daily, taken before the first meal of the day.

  • For patients tolerating 100 mg and requiring additional glycemic control, the dose may be increased to 300 mg once daily, provided the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m².

  • Tablets should be swallowed whole.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to canagliflozin or any excipients.

  • Severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m²), end-stage renal disease, or patients on dialysis.

  • Severe hepatic impairment.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Monitor renal function before and during treatment.

  • Increased risk of lower limb amputations; monitor for signs of infection or ulcers.

  • Risk of volume depletion; caution in elderly patients and those on diuretics.

  • Monitor for signs of ketoacidosis, urinary tract infections, and genital mycotic infections.

Storage:
Store at room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Protect from moisture and light.
