Description:
Amaryl contains glimepiride, an oral antidiabetic agent used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by stimulating the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells and improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin, helping to reduce blood glucose levels.
Indications:
Used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone do not provide adequate glycemic control.
Can be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic agents such as metformin or insulin.
Dosage and Administration:
Initial dose: 1 mg once daily with breakfast or the first main meal.
Dose adjustments should be based on the patient’s blood glucose response.
Maximum recommended daily dose: 8 mg.
Tablets should be swallowed whole with water, not chewed or crushed.
Contraindications:
Type 1 diabetes mellitus
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Severe renal or hepatic dysfunction
Known hypersensitivity to glimepiride or other sulfonylureas
Warnings and Precautions:
Risk of hypoglycemia; blood glucose should be monitored regularly.
Caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation.
Alcohol may enhance the hypoglycemic effect.
